Quranic Verse Structure

Understanding how verses (آيات) are structured helps you read more fluently:

Common Verse Patterns:

  • Statement of fact: ٱللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ — Allah — there is no deity except Him (2:255)
  • Command: ٱقْرَأْ — Read! (96:1)
  • Conditional: إِن تَتُوبَآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ — If you both repent to Allah (66:4)
  • Question & Answer: يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلْأَهِلَّةِ ۖ قُلْ هِىَ مَوَٰقِيتُ — They ask you about the new moons. Say: They are timings (2:189)

Verse End Markers:

Verses typically end with a rhyming pattern called fasila (فاصلة). Common endings:

ـِيم (īm): رَحِيم، عَلِيم، حَكِيم

ـُونَ (ūna): مُؤْمِنُون، كَٰفِرُون

ـِيتِ (īt): جَنَّةٌ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ
